About Ted Davidson

Card 89 is a series-1 issue from 1966 Topps, picturing Davidson with the Cincinnati Reds. It reflects the best season of his career, a 1966 campaign in which he appeared in 54 games and threw over 85 innings out of the Reds bullpen, working mostly with a sinker that produced ground balls alongside a curveball and slider. That effectiveness made him a fixture of Cincinnati's relief corps heading into 1967.

Ted Davidson was a left-handed relief pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves from 1965 to 1968. Born in Las Vegas and raised on a cattle ranch near Santa Maria, California, he signed with the Reds as an amateur free agent in 1960 and worked his way up through the club's minor league system as a starter before converting to relief. He debuted in the majors at age 25 on July 24, 1965, entering a game against the Houston Astros and immediately inducing future Hall of Famer Joe Morgan into a double play. His most active big league season came in 1966, when he logged over 85 innings out of the Reds bullpen relying on a sinker, curveball, slider and knuckle changeup rather than an overpowering fastball. In March 1967 he was shot three times by his estranged wife outside a Tampa bar, an incident that drew national attention; he recovered and returned to pitch that September, but was traded to the Atlanta Braves in June 1968 and was out of the majors by season's end. He died in 2006 in Bullhead City, Arizona.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
