About Hector Valle

The 1966 card, #314, pictures Valle with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth print series - an ordinary mid-set number. He had made his last major league appearance on October 3, 1965, so this issue reached collectors after he was already out of the majors for good, and he never got into another regular-season game.

Hector Jose Valle was a Puerto Rican catcher, born October 27, 1940 in Vega Baja and signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1960. Listed at 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, he batted and threw right-handed. He reached the majors on June 6, 1965, and his entire big-league career fit inside that one summer: nine games for Los Angeles, six of them spent behind the plate. He hit .308, going 4-for-13 with two runs batted in and one run scored, and reached base at a .400 clip. All four of his hits were singles, struck off Denny Lemaster, Bob Veale and Bob Sadowski. Defensively he handled all 21 of his chances cleanly for a 1.000 fielding percentage. His last major league appearance came on October 3, 1965. He was later acquired by the New York Mets and by the Detroit Tigers, but he never got into another regular-season game in the majors. He kept catching in other farm systems and in the Mexican League for years afterward, finally hanging up his spikes following the 1981 season. Valle died in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico on July 11, 2026, at the age of 85.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
