1966 Topps #508 Steve Hargan

About Steve Hargan
Hargan's 1966 card catches him mid-transformation: after opening the year in the Cleveland bullpen, he moved into the rotation in June and reeled off his first career shutout, a seven-hitter over Minnesota, then closed the season 13-10 with a 2.48 ERA. Pitching coach Early Wynn had him drop his high leg kick for a more conventional, three-quarter delivery that turned him into more of a sinkerballer. Card number 508 is a print series 6 card and is recognized as Hargan's rookie card.
Steve Hargan was a hard-throwing right-hander from Fort Wayne, Indiana, who signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1961 after a tryout at Municipal Stadium and worked his way up through five minor league stops, sharpening a slider under instruction from Hal Newhouser along the way. He debuted with Cleveland in August 1965 and settled into the rotation the following year. His best stretch came in 1967, when he opened the season with back-to-back shutouts, made his only All-Star team, and led the American League with six shutouts despite pitching through tendinitis. Arm trouble, including an ankle fracture and later carpal tunnel syndrome, shadowed the rest of his career. He remained with Cleveland through 1972, sat out the 1973 season, then pitched for the Texas Rangers from 1974 to 1977 before finishing that final year with brief stops in Toronto and Atlanta.
