About Arnold Earley

Card #388 in Topps' fifth series closes out Earley's playing days, showing him with the Chicago Cubs, the club he pitched for in 1966 before being dealt to the Houston Astros in June 1967. It is recognized as his rookie card. By the time this card reached shelves he had already been traded again, appearing in just two games for Houston that July before his final big league outing on July 25, 1967.

Arnold Earley was a left-handed pitcher who spent eight seasons in the majors, mostly as a Boston Red Sox reliever from 1960 to 1965 before finishing with the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros. A Lincoln Park, Michigan native, he signed with Boston in 1952 but did not reach the big leagues until age 27, his path slowed by two years in the Army and a run of modest minor league seasons. Once in Boston he became a steady southpaw out of the bullpen, working almost exclusively in relief apart from a handful of spot starts. His best year came in 1964, when he posted a 2.68 ERA and threw his lone career complete game, an 11-2 win over the contending Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park, before a wrenched elbow ended his season early. He finished his career with a 12-20 record, 310 strikeouts and 14 saves over 223 games. After baseball he settled in Flint, Michigan, and worked for years as a sheriff's deputy.
