1967 Topps #185 Ken Holtzman

About Ken Holtzman
In 1967 Holtzman served six months of Illinois National Guard duty, limiting him to weekend passes back to the Cubs; he still went 9-0 with a 2.53 ERA over 12 games, winning all four starts he made after being activated. His 1967 Topps card, #185 in the second series, is his rookie card with the Chicago Cubs.
Kenneth Dale Holtzman, born November 3, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, was a left-handed pitcher who spent 15 major league seasons (1965-1979) with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees. Drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 1965 draft out of the University of Illinois, he broke into the rotation in 1966 and quickly became the ace of a rebuilding Cubs staff, throwing no-hitters against the Atlanta Braves in 1969 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1971. Traded to Oakland after the 1971 season for outfielder Rick Monday, Holtzman joined a staff anchored by Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter and helped the Athletics win three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 through 1974, making two All-Star teams and winning 21 games in 1973. He finished his career with a 174-150 record, a 3.49 ERA and 1,601 strikeouts across 451 games.
