About this card

This is one of the thirteen combo cards in the 1967 Topps set, each pairing two or more players under a headline - from #1 The Champs to #521 Bird Bombers - rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Card #186 in the 1967 Topps set is a combination card pairing two young Mets sluggers under the "Mets Maulers" banner. Ed Kranepool, entering his sixth season, had settled in as the club's regular first baseman, batting .269 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI over 139 games at first base in 1967. Ron Swoboda, shifted from left field to make room for newly acquired Tommy Davis, opened 1967 at first base before moving to right field, and turned in his best offensive season yet: a .281 average with 13 home runs and 53 RBI. Topps grouped the pair as power-hitting building blocks for a last-place club still two years from its championship turn, giving collectors a joint look at two of the young hitters the Mets were counting on.

Ed Kranepool was the Mets' durable first baseman and the last man standing from the original 1962 roster, a steady bat who homered in the 1969 World Series and later set the major league single-season pinch-hit average record as 'Steady Eddie.' Ron Swoboda - the Mets outfielder called Rocky for his glove, remembered instead for the backhanded diving catch off Brooks Robinson that kept Game 4 of the 1969 World Series alive for the Miracle Mets.
