About Larry Elliot

Elliot's 1967 Topps card, #23, comes from the first print series. It shows him as a New York Met on the strength of 1966, when he tore up Triple-A Jacksonville at .303 with 11 home runs in 73 games, earned a July recall, and announced himself with a three-hit, four-RBI afternoon against Houston on July 18 that lifted his average to .348. He started 53 games in the outfield corners from there and settled at .246 across 65 games. By the time that card was out, Elliot had opened 1967 back at Jacksonville, and on May 10 the Mets traded him to the Kansas City Athletics for third baseman Ed Charles.

Lawrence Lee Elliot, born March 5, 1938 in San Diego, California, was an outfielder who batted and threw left-handed, stood 6-foot-2 and weighed 200 pounds. He attended Herbert Hoover High School, the alma mater of Ted Williams, and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a 20-year-old out of San Diego City College. Four years in the Pirates' farm system showed real power - 16 homers in both 1958 and 1961, and 25 for the 1959 Wilson Tobs of the Class B Carolina League. Elliot debuted on April 19, 1962, and in the last game of that eight-game trial he pinch-hit a home run off the Giants' Jack Sanford. After a second short look in 1963, the Pirates sold his contract to the New York Mets that December. He played most of 1964 in New York, spent 1965 on loan to his hometown San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League, and was back with the Mets in 1966. On May 10, 1967 the Mets sent him and $50,000 to the Kansas City Athletics for third baseman Ed Charles. Elliot finished at .236 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs in 157 major league games, then played three Triple-A seasons before retiring.
