About Bud Harrelson

1967 was Harrelson's first year as the Mets' regular shortstop, taking over after mentor Roy McMillan's shoulder injury ended his playing career that spring. He committed 21 errors in his first month before settling down, and coach Yogi Berra helped him use a heavier bat and make better contact; he finished at .254, still the best batting average of his career to that point, with 149 games at short. This 1967 Topps issue, card #306 from the fourth series, is a recognized rookie card for Harrelson.

Derrel McKinley Harrelson, called Bud from childhood after a younger brother mispronounced his name as Brother, was a slick-fielding shortstop who anchored the New York Mets infield for 13 seasons after debuting in 1965. A switch-hitter who taught himself the skill in the minors, he was never much of a bat, finishing with a .236 career average and seven home runs over 16 seasons with the Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers, but his glove made him a two-time All-Star (1970-71) and a 1971 Gold Glove winner with a career .969 fielding percentage. He was the everyday shortstop on the 1969 "Miracle Mets" world championship club and the 1973 pennant-winning team, and his brawl with Pete Rose during the 1973 NLCS became one of the era's defining moments. After retiring he coached and later managed the Mets in 1990-91.
