1967 Topps #307 Jim Beauchamp

About Jim Beauchamp
1967 Topps #307, from the set's fourth print series, catches Beauchamp with the Atlanta Braves after he'd made the club's Opening Day roster that spring as a reserve first baseman and pinch-hitter. He was back in the minors with Richmond by early May after only four plate appearances, and he spent most of the year there, slugging 25 home runs but seeing his average slip to .233; he returned to Atlanta for four late-season games without recording a hit.
James Edward Beauchamp was a power-hitting first baseman and outfielder from Vinita and Grove, Oklahoma, signed by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Oklahoma State in 1958 and named the 1963 Texas League MVP after a huge year for the Tulsa Oilers. Injuries, including a dislocated shoulder that damaged his throwing arm, slowed a career that stretched across ten major league seasons and five organizations: the Cardinals, Colt .45s/Astros, Braves, Reds and Mets. He hit for far more power in the minors than the majors, but stuck around long enough to appear in the 1973 World Series with New York. After retiring as a player he spent decades as a minor league manager and as the Atlanta Braves' bench coach and outfield coordinator, giving him a playing-and-coaching career in the game of roughly fifty years.
