1967 Topps #96 Art Shamsky

About Art Shamsky
1967 Topps #96 is a single-player card from the set's first print series, showing Shamsky with the Cincinnati Reds. The 1967 season was his last in Cincinnati and his toughest in the majors, as recurring back trouble limited him to 76 games and a .197 average with 3 home runs. That November the Reds traded him to the New York Mets for infielder Bob Johnson.
Art Shamsky was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman from St. Louis who broke in with the Cincinnati Reds in 1965 after a strong minor-league run that included a Pacific Coast League title with San Diego. On August 12 and 14, 1966, he tied a major league record by homering in four straight at-bats, becoming the only player ever to hit three home runs in a game he did not start. Traded to the New York Mets after the 1967 season, he became a key right-field platoon bat on the 1969 World Series champions, batting .300 with 14 home runs during the regular season and starring in the NLCS sweep of the Atlanta Braves. He closed his career with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics in 1972. He is a member of the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
