About Dick Simpson

Card #6, a series-1 base issue, it is Simpson's first Topps card as a Red, pictured solo for the first time. It reports his 1966 season, his first after the winter trade that had brought him from Baltimore in the Frank Robinson deal: 92 games as a part-time Cincinnati outfielder, a .238 average, 4 home runs and 14 RBI.

Richard Charles Simpson, a 6-foot-4 outfielder born July 28, 1943, in Washington, D.C., signed with the Los Angeles Angels as a free agent out of Venice High School in 1961 and debuted in the majors on September 21, 1962, at age 19, pinch-hitting a single off Cleveland's Mudcat Grant. After three seasons with the Angels, he was traded to Baltimore for Norm Siebern in December 1965, then included a week later, with pitchers Milt Pappas and Jack Baldschun, in the trade that sent Frank Robinson from the Reds to the Orioles; Robinson's 1966 Triple Crown and World Series title for Baltimore made it one of baseball's most one-sided deals. Simpson played two seasons for the Reds, then bounced through the Cardinals, Astros, Yankees and Seattle Pilots in 1968 and 1969, closing a seven-season career with a .207 average, 15 home runs and 56 RBI in 288 games, without an All-Star or World Series appearance. He is the father of Colton Simpson, co-author of the memoir Inside the Crips.
