1967 Topps #601 Bill Bryan
One of 22 double-printed cards in this set's high-number series, so it turns up a little more often than most high numbers.

About Bill Bryan
Bryan's 1967 card, number 601, sits in the scarce seventh-series high numbers, the toughest stretch of the set to complete. It is one of 22 cards in that series Topps double printed, so it turns up more often than its series mates even though it is still a high number. The season it caps was his quietest: as the third catcher in New York behind Elston Howard and Jake Gibbs, Bryan got into 16 games, started just one of them behind the plate, and spent the other 15 coming off the bench to pinch-hit. He went 2-for-12 at the plate, and one of the two hits was a home run.
William Ronald Bryan, a left-handed hitting catcher from Morgan, Georgia, signed with the Kansas City Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1960 and reached the majors barely a year later, debuting on September 12, 1961. A tall backstop at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, he spent parts of six seasons with Kansas City, splitting the catching between 1962 and 1964 with Doc Edwards, Charlie Lau and Joe Azcue before taking the regular job. A June 1966 trade sent him to the New York Yankees, where he worked behind Elston Howard and Jake Gibbs, and the Washington Senators took him from New York in the Rule 5 draft after the 1967 season for his final big league year. Over eight seasons and 374 games he hit .216 with 209 hits, 41 home runs and 125 RBI, throwing out 47 base stealers and fielding .984 behind the plate. He died on April 9, 2026 in Opelika, Alabama, at the age of 87.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1967 Topps #601 card?
It is card #601 of the 609-card 1967 Topps Baseball set, picturing Bill Bryan of the New York Yankees.
Is 1967 Topps #601 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last print series, #534-609 - the scarce end of the set, holding both Hall of Fame rookies (Carew #569, Seaver #581). Twenty-two of the 76 are accepted double prints, so scarcity varies card by card inside the run. It is also a double print card (26 cards: #1, #30, #100, the #531 checklist and 22 high numbers). Cards printed twice on the sheet, so more plentiful than their neighbours: #1 The Champs, #30 Al Kaline, #100 Frank Robinson, the #531 seventh-series checklist, and 22 of the 76 high numbers (#534, 537, 539, 542, 547, 548, 550, 551, 554, 556, 559, 562, 564, 566, 569, 582, 588, 589, 596, 599, 601, 608), Carew #569 included. A high number that is also a double print is easier than its series suggests.
How many cards are in the 1967 Topps Baseball set?
609 cards, tracked as 624 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 609 without a gap - no number was skipped and none was used twice - and 15 cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
