About Bob Tolan

1967 Topps #474 comes from the set's sixth print series, issued as Tolan played a larger reserve role for St. Louis. He appeared in 110 games that season and was part of the Cardinals roster that beat the Boston Red Sox in seven games to win the World Series.

Bobby Tolan broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 as a left-handed hitting outfielder, serving as a reserve on the pennant-winning 1967 and 1968 clubs before a trade to Cincinnati sent him to the Reds along with reliever Wayne Granger for Vada Pinson. Handed the everyday center field job, Tolan hit .305 in 1969 and followed with a career year in 1970, batting .316 and leading the National League with 57 stolen bases as the Reds won the pennant. An Achilles injury cost him the 1971 season, but he returned in 1972 to win both the Comeback Player of the Year award and the Hutch Award. Later stops took him to the Padres, Phillies and Pirates before he closed his career with San Diego in 1979. Over 1,282 games he batted .265 with 86 home runs, 497 RBI and 193 stolen bases, and he also played a season in Japan for the Nankai Hawks. He is not a Hall of Famer.
