The story on this card
Cosman opened 1967 on the Cardinals' roster as a reliever before a midseason recall let him start, including an eight-and-a-third-inning outing against the Giants that beat Gaylord Perry. He finished the season on the World Series champion Cardinals, appearing in 10 games with a 1-0 record and 3.16 ERA. His 1967 Topps #384 card is part of the Rookie Stars subset in the fifth print series, a recognized rookie card that pairs him with fellow Cardinals pitcher Dick Hughes. A hard-throwing right-hander whose two-hit shutout in his 1966 debut announced him, control trouble kept him a fringe major leaguer with the Cardinals and Cubs.
Hughes' 1967 Topps card, #384, is a Rookie Stars subset issue shared with fellow Cardinals farmhand Jim Cosman, part of the set's fifth print series. It marks his recognized rookie card, arriving as he was about to break out: that season Hughes went 16-6 with a 2.67 ERA, led the Cardinals' rotation, and finished runner-up for National League Rookie of the Year as St. Louis won the World Series. Right-hander Dick Hughes broke in with St. Louis in 1966, then went 16-6 in his 1967 rookie year to help the Cardinals win the World Series, before a torn rotator cuff cut his career short after 1968.
