About Eddie Stanky
Card 81, a first-series card, finds Stanky back for his second season managing the White Sox. Built on pitching and speed but short on offense, his 1967 club stayed in a thrilling four-team pennant race into the final week before losing its last five games and finishing three games behind the eventual champion Red Sox.
Eddie Stanky was a scrappy, undersized second baseman who made himself into a winner through will more than raw tools. Born in Philadelphia in 1915, he reached the majors in 1943 with the Cubs and went on to play for the Dodgers, Braves, Giants and Cardinals through 1953, drawing walks at an elite rate (over 100 in six different seasons) and leading the National League in on-base percentage twice. He reached the World Series three times with three different pennant winners. As a Dodger in 1947 he was among Jackie Robinson's earliest teammate supporters. He later managed the Cardinals, White Sox and briefly the Rangers, was named Manager of the Year with St. Louis in 1952, and closed out his baseball life as a highly successful college coach at South Alabama.
