On this card: Pete Ward, Don Buford

About this card
This is one of the thirteen combo cards in the 1967 Topps set, each pairing two or more players under a headline - from #1 The Champs to #521 Bird Bombers - rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Card 143 pairs two Chicago White Sox regulars under the Sox Sockers banner, a print series 2 combination card built around Chicago's lineup. Pete Ward split 1967 between left field and first base, batting .233 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI in 146 games, his power holding up even as his average slipped. Don Buford worked mostly at third base (121 games) with time at second (51 games), hitting .241 with 4 home runs, 32 RBI and 61 runs across 156 games, as Chicago battled Boston, Detroit and Minnesota into the season's final week before falling short. The two had shared the same infield mix for years, with Ward blocking Buford's path to third base before Chicago shuffled both men between third, second and the outfield depending on the season.
Pete Ward - Canadian-born third baseman who won The Sporting News American League Rookie of the Year in 1963, hitting .295 with 22 home runs for the Chicago White Sox before a 1965 car accident and a neck injury ended his run as a star. Don Buford - a slap-and-walk infielder for the White Sox before Baltimore moved him to the outfield, where his patient bat sparked three straight Orioles pennant-winners and earned him his only All-Star selection in 1971.
