About this card

This is one of the twenty manager cards in the 1967 Topps set - one for each of the twenty franchises.

About Leo Durocher

Durocher's 1967 Topps card, #481 in the sixth series, catches him fresh off his return to managing after a decade away: hired by the Cubs for the 1966 season, he ended the club's "College of Coaches" system and declared at his first press conference that he was the manager, not a head coach. The Cubs nonetheless finished tenth and last at 59-103, behind even the Mets, the only 100-loss season in his twenty-five years on a big-league bench.

Leo Durocher spent nearly half a century in the major leagues, first as a slick-fielding, light-hitting shortstop and later as one of the game's most combative managers. He got a two-game trial with the 1925 Yankees, became a regular there in 1928 and played through 1945 with the Reds, Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers, winning World Series rings as a player in 1928 and 1934. Nicknamed "Leo the Lip" for his incessant yapping, he became Brooklyn's player-manager in 1939 and led the Dodgers to the 1941 pennant, then took over the New York Giants in 1948, winning the 1951 pennant on Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" and sweeping the 1954 World Series. He returned to the dugout in 1966 to manage the Chicago Cubs into 1972, then closed his career with the Houston Astros, retiring with 2,008 wins, fifth all-time. The line "nice guys finish last," a newspaper condensation of a 1946 remark he later adopted, entered the language. Durocher died in 1991 and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 1994 by the Veterans Committee.
