About Woody Woodward

In 1967 Woodward held off a challenge from rookie Felix Millan to claim the Atlanta Braves' regular second base job, playing 120 games there and posting the league's best fielding percentage among second basemen despite a .226 batting average. His 1967 Topps card, number 546, is a high number from the seventh print series.

William Frederick Woodward, known as Woody, was a slick-fielding infielder from Miami who signed with the Milwaukee Braves out of Florida State University after a standout amateur career, including third-team All-American honors. He spent nine major league seasons, 1963 to 1971, as a shortstop and second baseman for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, valued more for his glove than his bat. His finest offensive year came in 1966 with Atlanta, when he posted career highs across the board. Traded to Cincinnati in 1968, he became a steady utility piece for the Big Red Machine, appearing in the 1970 National League Championship Series and World Series against Baltimore. He hit only one home run in 2,423 career plate appearances. He retired after the 1971 season and later built a long front-office career, including stints as general manager of the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners.
