The story on this card
In 1967 Robinson arrived in New York after an offseason trade that sent Clete Boyer to Atlanta, winning the James P. Dawson Award as Yankees camp's top rookie and homering in the season opener. He lost the right-field job to Steve Whitaker within a month and finished at .196 with 7 home runs and 29 RBIs in 116 games. His Topps #442 Yankees Rookie Stars card, shared with pitcher Joe Verbanic, is a recognized rookie card from the set's fifth print series. Bill Robinson broke in as a Braves pinch runner for Hank Aaron in 1966, later anchored Pittsburgh's We Are Family 1979 champions, and became a respected big-league hitting coach after his playing days ended.
In 1967, his first year with the Yankees after a June recall from Triple-A Syracuse, Verbanic moved into the starting rotation and won his first two decisions, including a complete-game shutout of Washington on June 8 in which he also drove in two runs at the plate. He finished 4-3 with a 2.80 ERA and two saves over 28 games. This card, #442 in the Rookie Stars subset shared with Bill Robinson, marked his first Topps issue as a Yankee and is recognized as his rookie card. A slim Western Pennsylvania right-hander who won his first two Yankees starts in 1967 before a rotator cuff injury cut his career short by age 30.
