1969 Topps #372 Adolfo Phillips

About Adolfo Phillips
1969 Topps #372, from the set's fourth print series, shows Phillips with the Chicago Cubs. A hand fracture from a spring-training pitch delayed his season, and on June 11, 1969 the Cubs traded him and pitcher Jack Lamabe to the expansion Montreal Expos for infielder Paul Popovich, ending his tenure under Durocher. He finished 1969 splitting time between the Cubs and Expos, batting .218 with 4 home runs.
Adolfo Phillips, a Panamanian center fielder from Bethania, signed with the Phillies in 1960 and tore through the minors, twice topping .300 with power and speed. He debuted with Philadelphia in September 1964, then was traded to the Chicago Cubs in April 1966 in a deal that also sent Ferguson Jenkins to Chicago. Manager Leo Durocher praised his talent and installed him as an everyday center fielder, and Phillips rewarded him with his finest season in 1967, setting a National League record with 29 intentional walks. Durocher and Phillips clashed repeatedly over hustle and mental errors, and the relationship soured before Phillips was traded to the expansion Montreal Expos in June 1969. He finished his career with Cleveland in 1972, then continued playing in the Mexican League through the mid-1970s. Career totals: .247 average, 59 home runs, 173 RBI and 82 stolen bases over parts of eight seasons.
