1969 Topps #523 Bob Chance

About Bob Chance
Card #523, from the sixth print series, is Chance's only California Angels card and the last of his playing career. He had spent 1968 hammering International League pitching for Washington's Buffalo farm club, batting .293 with 29 home runs, fourth in the league in hits and second in RBIs, and was never recalled for it. The Angels gave him five games in April 1969, seven at-bats and one run batted in, ending his major league time; he played in Japan in 1969 and 1970.
Bob Chance was a big, left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder from Statesboro, Georgia, signed by the Giants in 1960 and taken by Cleveland in the 1961 first-year player draft. He won the Eastern League Triple Crown at Class AA Charleston in 1963 and was called up that September. His 1964 rookie year with the Indians was the high point of a six-season major league career: 277 games, a .261 average, 24 home runs, 112 runs batted in. In Washington he fought his weight and a crowded first base, opening three straight seasons with the Senators and being sent down in each of them while he kept hitting at Triple-A Hawaii and Buffalo. He played 1969 and 1970 in Japan for the Sankei/Yakult Atoms, and died in Charleston, West Virginia, in 2013 at 73.
