1969 Topps #604 Bobby Etheridge

About Bobby Etheridge
Etheridge's 1969 Topps card, #604, is a high number from the set's seventh series, issued as he opened the 1969 season with the San Francisco Giants. That year he appeared in 56 games, splitting time mainly at third base with a single game at shortstop, batting .260 with 10 RBIs, his most extensive big-league action before a season-ending trade sent him to the San Diego Padres.
Bobby Lamar Etheridge was a third baseman who reached the major leagues with the San Francisco Giants after two seasons of college baseball at Mississippi State University, then signed with the Giants as an amateur free agent in 1964. He spent three seasons in the Giants' farm system before debuting in the majors on July 16, 1967, entering as a late-inning defensive replacement against the Chicago Cubs at Candlestick Park. Etheridge spent his rookie season playing behind established third baseman Jim Ray Hart, appearing in 40 games and earning a spot on Topps' 1967 All-Star Rookie team. He spent the entire 1968 season with the Pacific Coast League's Phoenix Giants before rejoining San Francisco for the 1969 opening day, again working as a reserve infielder. At the close of that season he was traded, along with Bob Barton and Ron Herbel, to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Frank Reberger. Etheridge continued playing in the minor leagues, later in the New York Mets organization, through 1973 without another major league appearance.
