About Joe Keough

Card #603 in Topps' seventh and final 1969 series, a high number, is recognized as Joe Keough's rookie card. It arrives during his first full season with the Kansas City Royals, the expansion club that selected him in the 1968 draft. Keough was on Kansas City's Opening Day roster and delivered the pinch-hit single that won the franchise's first game, hitting .187 with seven RBI over 70 games in 1969.

Joe Keough was a left-handed hitting outfielder who reached the majors with the Oakland Athletics in 1968, debuting with a home run off Lindy McDaniel in his first big-league at bat at Yankee Stadium. Selected by Kansas City in the 1968 expansion draft, he was on the Royals' Opening Day roster in 1969 and delivered the pinch-hit single that won the franchise's first-ever game. He worked into the everyday lineup in 1970, hitting .322 before a severely broken leg on June 28 ended that season. Keough returned in 1971 and set career highs with 110 games, 87 hits and 30 RBI. Traded to the Chicago White Sox after the 1972 season, he closed out his career with five games in 1973. Over six seasons split among Oakland, Kansas City and Chicago, he batted .246 with nine home runs and 81 RBI in 332 games, playing all three outfield spots and first base. He came from a baseball family: younger brother of Marty Keough and uncle of Matt Keough.
