About George Stone

1969 Topps #627, part of the set's seventh print series, is a high number and George Stone's rookie card, showing him with the Atlanta Braves. Stone opened that season in the bullpen, picking up three quick wins before moving into the rotation in late April. He finished 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA over 165.1 innings, helping the Braves capture the National League West title. He made his only NLCS appearance in the series-ending Game Three loss to the Mets, allowing a run-scoring single before being lifted for reliever Cecil Upshaw.

George Stone was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. A Louisiana Tech product signed by the Braves in 1966, he reached Atlanta as a September call-up in 1967 and became a rookie regular in 1968, working his way into the starting rotation. His best individual season came in 1969, when he went 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA and helped the Braves win the National League West before the club fell to the Mets in the NLCS. He remained a steady mid-rotation starter through 1972, relying on control and a changeup rather than velocity. Traded to New York with Felix Millan after the 1972 season, Stone had his finest year in 1973, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage as the Mets rallied to win the NL East and reach the World Series. Arm trouble limited him in 1974 and 1975, and he retired after the 1975 season rather than report to the Texas Rangers following a trade. He finished with a 60-57 career record, a 3.89 ERA and 590 strikeouts over 1,020.2 innings.
