About Mike Hedlund

Hedlund went 3-6 with a 3.24 ERA in the Royals' inaugural 1969 season, swinging between the rotation and bullpen and posting a 1.69 ERA in relief work, including a complete-game win over Oakland on September 18 in which he allowed one run and struck out eight. Card #591, a high number from the set's seventh series, shows him with Kansas City; his rookie card came earlier with his 1965 Topps Rookie Stars issue.

Mike Hedlund was a right-handed pitcher from Dallas, Texas who signed with the Cleveland Indians out of Arlington High School and reached the majors at eighteen. He pitched six seasons in the American League, briefly with Cleveland in 1965 and 1968 before Kansas City selected him in the 1968 expansion draft. With the Royals he worked as both a starter and reliever, his best stretch coming in 1971 when he went 15-8 with a 2.71 ERA, the league's fourth-best mark, as part of a young rotation alongside Dick Drago and Paul Splittorff. Between seasons he pitched winter ball in Venezuela, where he set a league record with 53 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, and he later traveled to Vietnam on a hospital tour with a group of major leaguers. Cleveland reacquired him for Kurt Bevacqua after the 1972 season, but he did not make the club and finished his career in the minors. He is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
