About this card

This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.

The story on this card

Robles broke camp as San Diego's Opening Day shortstop in the Padres inaugural season and became the first man to bat in franchise history, leading off against Houston's Don Wilson on April 8, 1969. This high-number Topps card, part of the set's seventh print series, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Padres rookie Al Santorini, making it a recognized rookie card for both players. Robles played 6 games for San Diego before a midseason assignment to Double-A Elmira, where a Padres coaching staff void left veterans like Elmira first baseman Jeff Pentland crediting him with teaching infield fundamentals. Dominican shortstop who batted first in San Diego Padres history in 1969, reaching on a Joe Morgan error and stealing second before his brief three-season big-league career wound down.

1969 Topps #592 is a high number from the set's seventh print series, a Rookie Stars card and Al Santorini's rookie card, pairing him with fellow Padres rookie Rafael Robles, both pictured with San Diego. It captures Santorini heading into his first full big-league season, in which he went 8-14 with a 3.95 ERA over 184.2 innings and tied Joe Niekro for the team lead in wins as the expansion Padres' rotation took shape. Right-hander who broke in with Atlanta in 1968 for a single game, then anchored San Diego's rotation before finishing his career with St. Louis in 1973.
