1969 Topps #514 Mike Lum

About Mike Lum
Lum returned to a reserve role in 1969 once Carty came back from his illness, batting .268 with 1 home run and 22 RBI over 121 games as Atlanta won the NL West. He reached the postseason for the first time, going 2-for-2 with a double in the 1969 NLCS against the Mets. Card #514, from series 6, is a standard Braves issue, simply reflecting that reserve-outfielder season.
Mike Lum was born in Honolulu in 1945 to a Japanese mother and an American soldier and was adopted as a baby by a Chinese couple, making him the first American of Japanese ancestry to reach the majors. A star quarterback in high school, he signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1963 and converted from first base to the outfield in the minors. Lum debuted for Atlanta in September 1967 and spent fifteen big-league seasons with the Braves, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs, playing outfield and first base as a versatile reserve who rarely won an everyday job outright. His best year came in 1973, when he hit .294 with career highs of 16 home runs and 82 RBI while filling in at first base for Hank Aaron. Traded to Cincinnati in 1976, he served on the Big Red Machine's bench before returning to Atlanta, where he became one of the National League's top pinch hitters, finishing with 103 career pinch hits. He later spent decades as a respected minor-league hitting coach.
