1969 Topps #502 Minnie Rojas

About Minnie Rojas
Card 502 comes from the fifth series. His rookie card was 1967's #104. It shows Rojas trying to come back from the arm trouble that ended his 1968 season, pitching briefly in the minors and the Mexican League. The comeback did not stick, and lingering elbow issues led him to retire from baseball at 35 without returning to a major-league mound.
Minnie Rojas was a Cuban-born right-handed relief pitcher who reached the majors with the California Angels at age 32 after years in the minors and the Mexican League. Born in Remedios, Villa Clara, he signed with the Giants in 1960 but was never promoted, then won 21 games as a starter for Jalisco of the Mexican League in 1965, which drew the Angels' interest. He debuted on May 30, 1966, won his first big-league start, and quickly settled into the bullpen. His best year came in 1967, when he set an Angels franchise saves record, won the American League Fireman of the Year award, and finished 24th in AL MVP voting. Elbow tendinitis and calcium deposits cut short his 1968 season, and after a brief 1969 comeback bid in the minors and Mexico, lingering arm trouble ended his career at 35. Across three big-league seasons he went 23-16 with a 3.00 ERA and 43 saves in 157 games.
