The story on this card
Danny Breeden's 1969 Topps card is #536, a Rookie Stars issue from series six shared with fellow rookie Dave Roberts of the San Diego Padres. Breeden had been purchased by the Reds from the Padres that June, and within weeks he made his major league debut on July 24, 1969 at Shea Stadium, starting at catcher against the Mets while regular Johnny Bench was unavailable. He collected his only hit of the season in that first game, a second-inning single, as the Reds beat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings on a Tony Perez home run. Breeden appeared in just three games for Cincinnati that year, going 1-for-8 at the plate, and this rookie card is the lone Topps issue commemorating his brief 1969 debut season. Georgia-born catcher who bounced through four organizations before finally reaching the majors with the Reds in 1969, then closed out his brief big-league career with the Cubs in 1971.
Roberts made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres in 1969, the expansion club's inaugural season, after the Padres chose him in the 1968 expansion draft. 1969 Topps #536 is a Rookie Stars card from the sixth print series, pairing him with fellow Padres rookie Danny Breeden under the San Diego banner. It is a recognized rookie card for Roberts, whose full workload as a big-league starter and reliever would follow the next year. Left-handed pitcher who spent thirteen big-league seasons with eight clubs, 1969-1981, won 103 games, and was a 1979 World Series champion with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
