1969 Topps #537 Mike Paul

About Mike Paul
Card 537 in the sixth print series of the 1969 Topps set pictures Paul with the Cleveland Indians. In 1969 he worked as a spot starter and long reliever for a Cleveland club that stumbled out of the gate, losing 15 of its first 16 games and finishing with 99 losses. Paul appeared in 47 games, making 12 starts, and struck out 98 batters in 117.1 innings while going 5-10 with a 3.61 ERA. This is a recognised rookie card for Paul.
Mike Paul was a left-handed pitcher from Detroit who grew up in Compton, California and starred at Cerritos Junior College before a scholarship brought him to the University of Arizona, where he helped lead the Wildcats to the 1966 College World Series. The Cleveland Indians drafted him in 1967, and less than a year later he debuted in the majors on May 27, 1968, earning a save in relief against the Twins. Paul spent parts of four seasons with Cleveland as a spot starter and long reliever before a December 1971 trade sent him to the Texas Rangers, where in 1972 he posted his finest season, a 2.17 ERA under manager Ted Williams. He later pitched for the Rangers and Chicago Cubs before finishing his major league career in 1974. Paul went on to a long career as a pitching and bullpen coach, working with the Athletics, Mariners and other organizations.
