About this card

This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.

The story on this card

Colton's card is again a Rookie Stars issue, this time shared with fellow Phillies prospect Don Money. The back reflects his 1968 season, in which he was called up to Philadelphia and made his only major league appearance, a relief outing against Cincinnati on May 6. An off-field shoulder injury that June sent him back to the minors, where he closed out the year with San Diego before returning to the Eugene Emeralds' roster in 1969. A California-born right-hander who set a Cal Berkeley strikeout record before a single big-league relief outing for the Phillies; later a magazine writer and author.

Money's 1969 Topps card is #454, a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from the fifth print series shared with Larry Colton, each pictured with his own club, Money with the Philadelphia Phillies. It is a recognized rookie card for Money, issued the year he was recalled to Philadelphia and took over as the club's regular shortstop, batting .229 over 127 games. Two collectible states exist, distinguished by the color of the printed names: yellow or white. Don Money was a four-time All-Star third baseman for the Phillies and Brewers, remembered for a major league record 86-game errorless streak at the hot corner and a sixteen-season career spent mostly in Milwaukee.
