1969 Topps #479 Richie Scheinblum

About Richie Scheinblum
In 1969 Scheinblum played his fullest big league season to that point, appearing in 102 games for Cleveland and batting .186 with his first career home run. This solo card, from the fifth print series, shows him with the Indians during a stretch when he was still working to establish himself as a regular outfielder before a 1970-71 minor league resurgence in Wichita and Denver reopened his path to the majors. His rookie card came in 1965.
Richie Scheinblum was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors between 1965 and 1974, playing for the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. A C.W. Post College graduate, he broke in with Cleveland as a September call-up in 1965 and spent several seasons shuttling between the Indians and their Portland farm club before piecing together a full-time role. His best year came in 1972 with Kansas City, where he hit .300, made the American League All-Star team, and was named the Royals' Player of the Month in August; that September he wore a black armband to honor the Israeli athletes killed at the Munich Olympics. He finished his career with a .263 average, 13 home runs and 127 RBI over 462 games, and later played two seasons in Japan for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He was one of a small handful of Jewish players in the majors during his era.
