About Rod Hendricks

In 1969 Hendricks caught 87 games for the pennant-winning Orioles, hitting .244 with 12 home runs and 38 RBI while sharing the job with Andy Etchebarren. He led American League catchers in fielding percentage that season and went on to the ALCS and World Series against the Mets, memorably lining a potential extra-base hit in Game Three that center fielder Tommie Agee ran down for the out. This 1969 Topps card, number 277 from the third series, is his rookie card.

Elrod Hendricks was a catcher from Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands, who spent twelve major league seasons from 1968 to 1979, mostly with the Baltimore Orioles. Selected off the California Angels in the 1967 Rule 5 draft, he shared catching duty with Andy Etchebarren and became a steady defensive presence behind Baltimore's pitching staff, working closely with Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson through three straight American League pennants from 1969 to 1971 and the 1970 World Series title. He also played for the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees before returning to Baltimore, hitting .220 with 62 home runs across 711 career games. His most productive year at the plate came in 1970, when he drove in 41 runs and then hit .364 with a home run in that year's World Series win over Cincinnati. After retiring as a player he became the Orioles' bullpen coach for 28 years, the longest coaching tenure in franchise history.
