1970 Topps #361 Ray Jarvis

About Ray Jarvis
Jarvis made the Red Sox out of spring training in 1969 and debuted April 15 against the Orioles, stranding Frank Robinson on third after a leadoff triple. Five days later he pitched 8 2/3 innings of relief against the Indians for his first win, and he finished the year 5-6 with a 4.75 ERA in 29 games. His 1970 Topps card, #361 in the third series, is his rookie card and lists him with Boston.
Ray Jarvis was a right-handed pitcher from Providence, Rhode Island, who worked 44 games for the Boston Red Sox in 1969 and 1970. He grew up playing ball on the lawn of the Rhode Island State House. He pitched for the Chatham A's in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 1964 and signed with Boston scout Joe Dugan after the Red Sox took him in the 18th round of the 1965 draft. Army Reserve obligations followed him through the minors; in 1967 he went 15-8 with a 2.04 ERA for the Waterloo Hawks and made the Midwest League all-star team. He reached Boston in 1969, started 12 of his games, and finished with a 5-7 record, a 4.64 ERA and one save over 116 1/3 innings. In October 1970 he was part of the trade that sent Tony Conigliaro to California, and he left the game after 1971. Jarvis died in 2020.
