1970 Topps #720 Rick Reichardt

About Rick Reichardt
Early in 1970 Rick Reichardt was traded to the Washington Senators with Aurelio Rodriguez for third baseman Ken McMullen. His card, #720, is a high number from the seventh series and still shows him with California. Across both clubs he hit .251 with 15 home runs in 116 games that season.
Frederic Carl Reichardt was a two-sport star at the University of Wisconsin, twice leading the Big Ten in batting and starring at fullback on the 1962 Badgers team that fell to USC in the 1963 Rose Bowl. A bidding war for his amateur signing led him to the Los Angeles Angels in 1964 with a then-record $200,000 bonus, and the frenzy over his signing helped push Major League Baseball to institute its first amateur draft in 1965. He debuted with the Angels that September and settled into the outfield as the club moved to Anaheim, becoming the first player to homer at the new Anaheim Stadium in 1966. A kidney ailment that year required surgery and slowed him afterward, though he still posted double-digit home run totals into the early 1970s. He was later traded to the Washington Senators and then to the Chicago White Sox, who released him in 1973, and he finished with the Kansas City Royals, retiring in 1974 after eleven big-league seasons as an outfielder.
