1971 Topps #129 Aurelio Monteagudo

About Aurelio Monteagudo
Monteagudo went 1-1 with a 2.96 ERA in 21 relief games for the 1970 Royals. Called up from Omaha in June to replace Wally Bunker, he won on June 15, nearly three years after his last major league game. His 1971 Topps card, #129 from the first series, pictures him with Kansas City. Sent back to Omaha for all of 1971, he went 12-4 with 11 saves and a 2.60 ERA in 46 games and made the American Association All-Star team.
Aurelio Monteagudo was a Cuban right-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the Kansas City Athletics and also appeared for the Houston Astros, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals and California Angels across parts of seven big-league seasons. He signed with the Athletics as a teenager in 1961 and worked his way up through their farm system, striking out 205 batters for Triple-A Portland in 1963 before his September call-up. He bounced between the Athletics' rotation and bullpen and the Pacific Coast League for several years before being sold to Houston in 1966. After stops in the Reds and White Sox systems, he returned to the majors with Kansas City's expansion Royals in 1970 and closed out his big-league career with the Angels in 1973. He pitched in the Mexican League from 1974 to 1981 and played 20 seasons of Venezuelan winter ball, later coaching in the Angels' minor-league system, and was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009.
