1971 Topps #221 Dave Morehead

About Dave Morehead
Morehead's #221 sits in the second series of the 1971 Topps set with the Kansas City Royals. In 1970 he pitched 121 2/3 innings with 69 strikeouts and one complete game. His last major league game came on September 29, 1970. The Royals released him in spring training of 1971, and arm trouble ended his career at age 28.
David Michael Morehead was a right-handed pitcher who spent eight major league seasons (1963-1970), the first six with the Boston Red Sox and the last two with the expansion Kansas City Royals. Scout Ray Boone signed him off a 16-0 senior season at San Diego's Hoover High School, the school that also produced Ted Williams. He opened his career with a five-hit, 10-strikeout, 3-0 shutout of Washington on April 13, 1963. On September 16, 1965 he no-hit the Cleveland Indians 2-0, walking only Rocky Colavito. It was the last no-hitter by a Red Sox pitcher until Hideo Nomo's in 2001, and the last thrown at Fenway Park until Derek Lowe's in 2002. Arm ailments, starting with a shoulder injury early the following season, limited him to 33 games over the next three years. He finished 40-64 with a 4.15 ERA and 627 strikeouts in 819 1/3 innings, then earned a marketing degree from San Diego State University and built a business selling sporting goods to retail chains.
