The story on this card
The Royals' second season, 1970, ended at 65-97, a tie with Milwaukee for fourth in the American League West and 33 games behind the Twins. Charlie Metro took over from Joe Gordon as manager, started 19-33 and was replaced by Bob Lemon, a Hall of Fame pitcher, who went 46-64 the rest of the way. The staff posted a 3.78 ERA and 11 shutouts, while the club scored 611 runs. Bob Oliver hit a team-high 27 of the club's 97 home runs, the first Royals player to reach 20 in a season. Kansas City drew 693,047 fans to Municipal Stadium. Topps issued the Royals team card as #742 in the sixth series of the 1971 set.
