About John O'Donoghue

The 1971 season was his last in the majors, and all of it came in relief for Montreal. He appeared in 13 games and pitched 17 1/3 innings. He went 0-0 with a 4.67 ERA and 7 strikeouts. His final appearance came on June 22, and the Expos released him on June 30, which ended his professional career. Card #743 pictures him with the Expos.

John O'Donoghue was a left-handed pitcher born October 7, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri, who stood 6 feet 4 inches. He pitched for the University of Missouri, taking the mound twice in the 1958 College World Series championship series as the Tigers finished runner-up to USC, then signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1959. After a combined 26-39 record over four minor league seasons, he went 14-11 in 1963 and debuted with the Athletics that September. He worked mainly as a starter through 1967 and almost entirely in relief after that, with stops in Cleveland, Baltimore, Seattle, Milwaukee and Montreal. His finest outing came on August 19, 1967, a one-hit shutout of Detroit at Tiger Stadium. Over nine major league seasons he went 39-55 with a 4.07 ERA and 377 strikeouts. He was named to the 1965 American League All-Star team. He also became a recurring figure in Jim Bouton's book Ball Four during his 1969 season with the Seattle Pilots.
