About Gene Mauch
Mauch's Expos finished 71-90 in 1971, fifth in the National League East. Rusty Staub hit .311 with 19 home runs and 97 RBI. Bill Stoneman went 17-16 with 251 strikeouts. His 1971 Topps baseball manager card, #59, appeared in the first series and identified him with the Montreal Expos.
Gene Mauch signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943 and reached the majors the following spring at 18. Army Air Forces service interrupted his playing career, which eventually spanned nine major league seasons and six clubs. He batted .239 in 304 games. As player-manager of the Atlanta Crackers in 1953, he led the club to third place, then resigned because he felt unready for the job. He later managed the Minneapolis Millers to the 1958 Junior World Series title. In the majors he managed Philadelphia, Montreal, Minnesota and California over 26 seasons, winning 1,902 games. His approach emphasized bunting, advancing runners, speed and defense. Mauch retired during spring training in 1988 and returned as the Royals' bench coach in 1995.
