1971 Topps #284 Jim Gosger

About Jim Gosger
A pinch-hit double on June 3, 1970 opened Gosger's Montreal career, and that summer he said he had been discouraged in the spring and had thought seriously about hanging it up and going into coaching. On June 18 his home run off Phil Niekro helped the Expos rally from a 7-2 deficit against Atlanta. He was hitting .364 at the end of June before the average slid, and he played 19 games at first base that season. Third-series #284 is his Expos card in the black-bordered 1971 set.
Jim Gosger played ten major league seasons as an outfielder and first baseman for Boston, the Athletics in Kansas City and Oakland, Seattle, New York and Montreal. The Port Huron native signed with Boston in January 1962 while attending Port Huron Junior College. In his first professional season at Winston-Salem, he batted .283 with 19 home runs and 83 RBI and made the Carolina League's postseason all-star team. He started both games of the Mets' September 12, 1969 doubleheader at Forbes Field and received a $100 World Series share, although he was ineligible for their postseason roster. He finished with a .226 average, 30 home runs and 177 RBI in 705 major league games. After retiring in 1974, he worked in Port Huron's utilities division and refereed high school and junior college football and basketball for three decades.
