1971 Topps #460 Fritz Peterson

About Fritz Peterson
Peterson was 6-7 on June 28, 1971, having blown shutouts in the ninth inning on June 23 and 28. He won at Fenway on July 3, reached 13-7 by August 17, then lost five straight and finished 15-13 with a 3.05 ERA over 274 innings. The Yankees scored two or fewer runs in nine of his 13 losses. His #460 comes from the fourth series.
Fritz Peterson was a left-handed pitcher who spent 1966 to 1976 in the majors with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers. Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1963 out of Northern Illinois University, he joined the New York rotation as a rookie in 1966 and posted a career record of 133-131. His best year came in 1970, when he went 20-11 and earned his only All-Star selection. Peterson led the American League in fewest walks per nine innings five years running, 1968 through 1972, and his lifetime ERA at the original Yankee Stadium was the best of any Yankee who pitched there. Traded to Cleveland in April 1974, he pitched two more seasons before finishing his career with the Rangers in 1976. Writers who covered the Yankees voted him the 1970 Good Guy Award.
