1971 Topps #133 Mickey Lolich

About Mickey Lolich
A cut fastball helped Lolich lead the American League in 1971 with 25 wins and 308 strikeouts. He also led it with 29 complete games and 376 innings. He finished second to Vida Blue in Cy Young voting. Topps paired him with Sam McDowell and Bob Johnson on first-series strikeout leaders card #71; his individual Tigers card, #133, is from the second series.
Mickey Lolich was born right-handed in Portland, Oregon, but exercises to strengthen an injured left arm after a childhood accident helped turn him into a left-handed pitcher. He signed with Detroit in 1958 and spent 13 of his 16 major league seasons with the Tigers. His route to their rotation included refusing a minor-league demotion and returning home, where a season with the Portland Beavers and advice from pitching coach Gerry Staley helped him gain control. Lolich won three complete games in the 1968 World Series, beating Bob Gibson in Game 7 on two days of rest to earn the Series MVP award. Away from the mound, he rode a motorcycle to Tiger Stadium and organized visits to Cape Kennedy for teammates during spring training. He finished his career with 217 victories and 2,832 strikeouts and entered the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
