The story on this card

LaGrow spent 1971 at Triple-A Toledo, where he went 2-6 with a 6.00 ERA. He made 31 of 36 appearances in relief. He struck out 65 batters in 69 innings against 60 walks. The Tigers had used him in 10 games the summer before, when he posted a 7.30 ERA. His rookie card is the Rookie Stars issue #39 in the first series, shared with fellow Tigers prospect Gene Lamont, whose rookie card it also is. Right-hander Lerrin LaGrow pitched 1970-80 for Detroit, St. Louis, the White Sox, Dodgers and Phillies. A Tigers starter who lost 19 in 1974, he converted to closing in Chicago and saved 25 games in 1977.

Lamont caught seven games for the 1971 Tigers and went 1 for 15, down from the .295 he had hit as a September call-up the year before. Topps placed him on #39, a Rookie Stars card shared with Lerrin LaGrow, both men printed with the Tigers. Gene Lamont caught for the Detroit Tigers from 1970 to 1975, then managed the Chicago White Sox to the 1993 AL West title, a season that brought him AL Manager of the Year honors, and later the Pittsburgh Pirates (1997-2000).
