1971 Topps #454 Mike Paul

About Mike Paul
Left-hander Mike Paul went 2-8 with a 4.81 ERA in 30 games for Cleveland in 1970 and spent the stretch after the All-Star break at Triple-A Wichita until September. He then hurt his shoulder in winter ball. Card #454, from the fourth series, lists him with the Indians. He arrived at 1971 spring training in pain, was sent back to Wichita, and was recalled in midsummer, finishing 2-7 with a 5.95 ERA in 17 games.
Mike Paul was a left-handed pitcher from Detroit who grew up in Compton, California, and starred at Cerritos Junior College. A scholarship then brought him to the University of Arizona, where he helped lead the Wildcats to the 1966 College World Series. The Cleveland Indians drafted him in 1967, and less than a year later he debuted in the majors on May 27, 1968, earning a save in relief against the Twins. Paul spent parts of four seasons with Cleveland as a spot starter and long reliever before a December 1971 trade sent him to the Texas Rangers, where in 1972 he posted a career-low 2.17 ERA under manager Ted Williams. He later pitched for the Rangers and Chicago Cubs before finishing his major league career in 1974. After his playing days he became the Athletics' bullpen coach in 1987 and the Mariners' pitching coach in 1989, working with a young Randy Johnson in Seattle.
