1971 Topps #453 Terry Crowley

About Terry Crowley
Crowley pulled a hamstring in spring training 1971 and was sent back to Triple-A Rochester. He was recalled a few times and hit .174 in 23 at-bats over 18 games. At Rochester he hit cleanup, played first base and hit five home runs in the playoffs as the club won the Junior World Series. His 1971 Topps #453 is a fourth-series Orioles card.
Terry Crowley was a left-handed hitting outfielder, first baseman and pinch hitter who played 15 seasons, 1969 to 1983, for the Orioles, Reds, Braves and Expos. He batted .250 with 42 home runs and 229 RBIs in 865 games. His 108 career pinch hits ranked 13th all-time as of 2011. He was the first designated hitter in Orioles history. Teammate Jim Palmer called him a great pinch hitter who studies pitchers, and American League managers voted him the league's best pinch hitter in 1979. A Staten Island native, he starred at Curtis High, attended Long Island University in Brooklyn and was drafted by Baltimore in the 11th round in 1966. He earned World Series rings with Baltimore in 1970 and Cincinnati in 1975. Afterward he coached hitters for the Orioles from 1985 to 1988 and 1999 to 2010 and for the Twins from 1991 to 1998. He has been inducted into the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame.
