1971 Topps #727 Ray Lamb

About Ray Lamb
In 1971 Cleveland moved Lamb into the rotation, and he made 21 starts in 43 games. He went 6-12 with a 3.35 ERA, and three of those starts were complete games, one of them a shutout. The Indians finished 60-102, sixth in the American League East. Card #727 is printed with the Indians, in the sixth series.
Ray Lamb was a right-handed pitcher who worked in relief and in the rotation for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1969 and 1970 and the Cleveland Indians from 1971 to 1973, going 20-23 with a 3.54 ERA in 154 games. He pitched at the University of Southern California in number 42, was a 40th-round Dodgers pick in 1966, and joined the club on August 1, 1969, after three seasons in the minors. The Dodgers gave him 42, Jackie Robinson's number, which no Dodger had worn since Robinson retired in 1957; he struck out 11 in 15 innings with a 1.80 ERA that season. The jersey was taken back at season's end as the club prepared to retire it, and he wore 34 in 1970. Fernando Valenzuela received 34 in 1980 and the Dodgers retired it too, leaving Lamb the last Dodger to wear 42 and the only one to have worn two numbers the club later retired. After baseball he sculpted miniature lead military figures and by 1980 was working for Perth Pewter, a subsidiary of Superior Models, on Wizards and Lizards, a line of 25 mm fantasy miniatures that reviewers praised for its detail.
