1971 Topps #228 Wayne Garrett

About Wayne Garrett
Garrett hit 12 home runs in 1970, third best on the Mets, and led the club with a .390 on-base percentage; on July 26 he homered twice against the Dodgers. With Joe Foy arriving from Kansas City in the Amos Otis trade, he moved into a utility role between third and second base. Card #228, from the second series, shows him with the Mets. The Bayside National Guard called him up after that season.
Wayne Garrett was a left-handed-hitting third baseman who spent seven and a half seasons with the New York Mets, played 711 games at third base for them, and finished with the Montreal Expos and St. Louis Cardinals. A sixth-round pick of the Milwaukee Braves in 1965, he came to the Mets through the Rule 5 draft for $25,000 and made the 1969 roster as a utility man. The club kept shopping for a replacement almost every winter, bringing in Joe Foy, Bob Aspromonte, Jim Fregosi and Joe Torre, yet he took the job in 1973 and kept most of it through 1975. He played in two World Series with the Mets, homering twice against Oakland in 1973, once leading off Game 3, and he was the cutoff man on the Ball on the Wall play at Shea on September 20, 1973. The Mets sent him to Montreal in 1976, the Expos sold him to St. Louis in July 1978, and he finished his career with two seasons for the Chunichi Dragons in Japan.
