About Ed Kirkpatrick In Action

Kirkpatrick batted .219 with nine home runs and 46 RBI in 1971, splitting his time between the outfield and catcher. He batted .275 in 113 games in 1972, catching 108. On October 4, his eighth-inning single was the final base hit in Municipal Stadium's last game. Fifth-series cards #569 and #570, the latter an In Action issue, listed Kansas City.

Ed Kirkpatrick caught and played the outfield during 16 major league seasons, beginning with the Angels in 1962. He later played for Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Texas and Milwaukee, appearing in the National League Championship Series with the Pirates in 1974 and 1975. The left-handed hitter finished with 824 hits and a .238 average in 1,311 games. He hit 85 home runs and drove in 424 runs. His nickname, 'Spanky,' came from his resemblance to Little Rascals actor Spanky McFarland. A 1981 car accident left Kirkpatrick in a coma for five and a half months and caused lasting paralysis. He died of throat cancer in Mission Viejo, California, on November 15, 2010, at 66.
