1972 Topps #571 Nate Colbert

About Nate Colbert
Nate Colbert led the 1971 Padres with 27 home runs and 84 RBI, and his .264 average was a third straight yearly improvement. That season brought the first of his three All-Star selections. Topps gave him two cards in the fifth print series of the 1972 set, #571 with the Padres and #572 in the In Action subset, also with San Diego. In 1972 he hit 38 home runs, drove in 111 and finished eighth in the National League MVP voting.
Nate Colbert was a first baseman and three-time All-Star for San Diego. He signed with his hometown St. Louis Cardinals after graduating from Sumner High School in 1964. His major league career spanned 10 seasons and 1,004 games. He hit .243 with 173 home runs and 520 RBI. His 163 Padres home runs remained the club record until Manny Machado passed him in 2024. After playing, he returned to the Padres as a spring-training instructor and coached for the Riverside Red Wave. An ordained minister, he ran baseball schools and camps for young players. Colbert, Randy Jones and Ray Kroc formed the Padres Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 1999.
